How we started

“In 2012 I decided to set up a charity to run alongside the funded side of the dream on business. Well, what to call it. As we chatted about how women benefit and grow from our work we thought about trees and plants. Jane then suggested that we help people Blossom (I said she was good), and so The Blossom Charity was launched at the end of 2013 and so far it’s working. We’ve got a talented and supportive group of trustees who help agree the direction and make sure we are doing things well.

They are, as I am, obsessed by sustainability. At the end of a course or a programme it can be easy to get great scores about the course ... BUT our interest is whether the learning sticks. If it does great, if it doesn’t we try and work out why and make changes.

I don’t believe in shutting the door on anyone at the end of any work with us. We have women who come to us and two years later may need more help.

In 2014, I met a very interesting lady called Avril, whilst I was in London. She has had a successful career but her life wasn’t always easy. We talked about dream on and Blossom and she asked lots of questions. As you’d expect from an accountant, there is lots of data to support our work. She said that our work sounded very real and that it was clear it worked.

A few months later we met again and Avril said something that made my jaw drop. She offered to run a fund raiser and help Blossom. Her support makes a difference and it reduces the load on me. She has accepted the trustees request for her to be a Patron. It is something we wanted, but we needed the right person.

So in 2015 in addition to fundraising from grants and donations we had a city based fundraiser.”
